History

Radford Castle was built by the Harris Family in the early 1800s. Its original purpose was an ornate gatehouse in the guise of a castle, today we would call it a folly. The Harris family were great seafarers and traders. After the Spanish Armada, Francis Drake, Hawkins and all the other sea captains had a banquet In the main house. Walter Raleigh was imprisoned here before being transported to London and executed.

There are reportedly two ghosts near the castle, the White Lady and the Headless Monk.

For many years one family lived in the building and at one point ten members of the family were living there. In the 1970s the castle was an artist’s studio before being abandoned. In 2014 we approached Plymouth Council who owned it and offered to restore it. Several years later they agreed and in 2022 the restoration commenced. It was finished in May 2024.
